    Numerous ancient sources attest that Artemisia of Halicarnassus, a 5th C. BCE tyrant whose polis came under Persian rule in 524 BCE, figures prominently in Xerxes’ naval campaign against Greece. At least since Pompeius Trogus’ 1st C.
