Sikhism is the world's fifth-largest religion. It was founded during the late 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. Its adherents are known as Sikhs. Currently, there are about 30 million Sikhs worldwide. Most of them live in the Indian state of Punjab. As per Sikh tradition, Sikhism was established by Guru Nanak (1469–1539) and subsequently led by a succession of nine other Gurus. Before his death, the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), bestowed the status (...) of Guru to the sacred scripture of Sikhs, Adi Granth, which is presently known as Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) [1]. The Adi Granth was first compiled by Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, in 1604. Its second and final version has been the handiwork of Guru Gobind Singh, who added the hymns of his father, Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru [2], at Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Punjab, in 1705. The holy Sikh scripture, SGGS, contains 1430 pages of text in poetry form. In addition to the hymns of the six Sikh Gurus and four Sikhs, it includes hymns composed by fifteen saints (Bhagats) and eleven poet laureates (Bhats) of the Guru's court. Muslims and Hindus, Brahmins, and "untouchables" all come together in one congregation to create a universal scripture. It is a compendium of mystic, metaphysical and religious poetry written or recited between the 12th and 17th centuries in the Indian sub-continent [3]. Sri Guru Granth Sahib, through its comprehensive worldview, offers a perfect set of values and an applicable code of conduct. Its cardinal message addresses the welfare of all humans irrespective of their caste, colour, creed, culture, and religion. SGGS emphasizes love, respect, empathy, and acceptance of others' existence. It prohibits us from infringing on the freedom and rights of others. The life and works of the Sikh Gurus exemplify the practicability of these ideas. Their inter-faith dialogues highlighted that human unity and oneness could be achieved through tolerance, communication, and respect for others [4]. Besides a matchless elaboration of spirituality, Sri Guru Granth Sahib enshrines a powerful expression of the message of revolutionary ideals of social welfare, human rights, multicultural distinctness, and religious freedom. Phenomenology and ancient Greek philosophy. The title of this book, indicating these topics as its two main subjects, could give the impression that the subjects are held together by a circumstantial “and.” The title would then indicate a connection between phenomenology and a topic, ancient Greek philosophy, the way titles such as Art and Phenomenology, Phenomenology and Psychological Research, Phenomenology and Virtue Ethics do. This impression would be wrong. First, ancient Greek philosophers take pride of place in the dialogues initiated (...) by many phenomenologists with various figures from the history of philosophy. Second, this is not just because phenomenological philosophers have tended to regard ancient Greek philosophy as the revered beginning of Western thought, reflection upon which may help illuminate any topic modern human beings wish to inquire into or give it a kind of historical dignity. It is first and foremost because ancient Greek philosophy, understood as the scientific attempt to understand the world, ourselves, and our place in the world, in the phenomenological tradition is regarded as one important origin of contemporary Western philosophy and science, even if contemporary philosophy and science is also determined by a new ideal of philosophy that emerges in early modernity. Indeed, for most phenomenologists, Greek philosophy can be regarded as the roots supporting this new ideal—even if these roots are sometimes hidden from sight or forgotten. The main rationale for confronting ancient Greek philosophy phenomenologically is accordingly the attempt to bring to light in its full radicality the phenomenon “philosophy.” Unearthing philosophy as it was originally understood by Greek thinkers may, according to many phenomenologists at least, help us understand what philosophy in the full sense of the word was, has been, and may be again, but also what it has become or even degenerated into in modern times, for instance positivism. A universal religion is a philosophical and theological concept with universal applicability regardless of culture, race, sex, religion, nationality, or another distinguishing feature [1]. A universal religion may also emphasize universal principles and inclusively accept others. Some examples of universal religions are Baháʼí Faith, Buddhism, and Christian Universalism. These religions believe in one fundamental truth that transcends the national, cultural, or religious boundaries or interpretations of that one truth. Sikhism is a religion that emerged in the Punjab province of India (...) during the 15th century. While it is not typically described as a "universal" religion in the same way that, for example, Christianity or Islam are often told, it does contain values and principles that are universal and applicable to people from all walks of life. Sangat is a term derived from the root word "sang," meaning association or to accompany travelers on pilgrimage. It also relates to assembly, company, fellowship, congregation, meeting, or union. The word sangat refers only to fellowship but does not necessarily refer to the merits or traits of associates. Sangat: In the Sikh religion, the Sangat term is used to refer to the community of people who gather to worship and support each other in their spiritual journey. Through the Sangat, Sikhs (...) can deepen their understanding of the teachings of their faith. Thus, it allows people to connect with others who share their values and beliefs, fostering a sense of belonging and unity. The moral traits of Sangat are essential and are mentioned in both scripture of Guru Granth Sahib and the code of conduct. Both Amritdhari Sikhs (Khalsa) and Sehajdhari Sikhs are integral parts of the Sangat. In recent times, the Sangat has also adapted to the modern context by leveraging technology to connect people worldwide. God refers to a supernatural or divine being who is the universe's creator and ruler and is often seen as the ultimate source of moral and spiritual authority. Different cultures and religions have different beliefs and ideas about God. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, described various names and attributes of God, symbolized as "ੴ” (Ik Onkar) in his compositions. This article attempts to describe the concept of God as outlined in Guru Nanak’s hymns. It is pointed out that Guru (...) Nanak's hymns emphasize God's transcendental nature, which is described as formless, eternal, omnipresent and beyond human comprehension. However, he focuses on a personal and accessible relationship with the Divine, where individuals can connect with God through devotion, meditation, and leading a virtuous life. An important spiritual aspect of Guru Nanak’s concept of God is his description of the realization of God, often referred to as "union with the Divine" or "spiritual realization." By promoting the principles of equality, compassion, and service to humanity through his concept of an all-loving, compassionate God, Guru Nanak asserts that by following these values, individuals can experience a closer connection with God and ultimately achieve spiritual enlightenment. Dr. Devinder Singh Sekhon served as a Chemistry/Educational Administration professor at various colleges/Universities in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Presently, living in Windsor, Canada, he is actively contributing to the fields of Science, Religion, and Literature. Despite being a noted chemist and educationist, he is interested in sharing his insights about religion and science. These books describe the legends about the ten Gurus, their wisdom and teachings, and her poems, fables and a fairytale in German style. Elisabeth’s second set of books “Sikhism - Wellspring of Love” (in English) and “Sikhismus - Quell der Liebe” (in German), were published in 2010. The foundation of truthful living in Sikhism is the concept of ‘Sat,’ which means truth or reality. Sikhism emphasizes the importance of seeking and living in harmony with the ultimate truth, which is believed to be embodied in the teachings (...) of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs [1]. Truthful living involves aligning one's thoughts, words, and actions with this ultimate truth. Guru Nanak emphasizes the importance of truthful living as: ਸਚਹੁ ਓਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਉਪਿਰ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ॥ Sacẖahu orai sabẖ ko upar sacẖ ācẖār. Truth is the highest virtue, but higher still is truthful living. Currently, India-Pakistan relations have often been afflicted by cross-border terrorism, ceasefire violations, territorial disputes, etc. Improving bilateral ties is crucial for both countries, as it would mean stabilizing South Asia and improving the economies of both nations. A strong political will to mend the relationship at the current juncture is direly needed. A constructive approach and confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan can be crucial to improving their ties. About 550 years ago, Guru Nanak preached a special universal message of (...) truthful living, faith, and love [1]. His message was not addressed to a specific ethnic or religious group. It was meant for all humanity. Let us look at Guru Nanak's teachings in building good unneighborly ties between India and Pakistan and see what kind of prescriptions and insights he offers us to face the challenges of contemporary times. When India's environment was full of conflict between Hinduism and Islam, Guru Nanak proclaimed a beautiful universal message for all people, highlighting equality for all without any consideration of caste, colour, creed, gender, or race [2]. He asserted that the same One God creates all, whether we call him Ram, Allah, or any other name. Moreover, he emphasized that "See the Divine Light in all." Therefore, people of faith should recognize the Divine Light in everyone. Sasai so▫e sarisat jin sājī sabẖnā sāhib ek bẖa▫i▫ā. Sassa: He (Divine) who created the world, is the One Lord and Master of all. (M.1, SGGS, p. 432). Iknai bẖāʼnde sāji▫ai ik cẖānaṇ ṯihu lo▫e. Women represent half of all humanity, yet they continue to face discrimination in various parts of the world. The feminist movement has done much to lessen gender discrimination in Western societies. However, women in much of the world still face severe difficulties, such as violence, illiteracy, economic and social deprivation. It is increasingly recognized that better education and economic empowerment of women can play a significant role in uplifting the economic level of impoverished areas of the world and lowering birth (...) rates, which is crucial for addressing climate change. Having noted several general rituals and traditions of his time, Guru Nanak recognized that men often looked down upon women as inferior to them. They were thought of as commodities. He condemned this mindset and these practices. Thus, several centuries ahead of the feminist movement, Guru Nanak spoke out against gender discrimination in the subcontinent’s highly male-dominated environment. He opposed established orthodoxy with the radical assertion that women were worthy of praise and equal to men. Besides, God is gender-neutral. Similarly, the Cambridge Dictionary states that an apostle is someone who strongly supports a particular belief or political movement [2]. The Free Dictionary by Farlex describes an apostle as a person who pioneers an important reform movement, cause, or belief; a passionate adherent; or a strong supporter. In the light of the above meanings of the term (...) ‘apostle’, one can easily say that Guru Nanak was an apostle as he initiated great moral and social reforms in the Indian society of his times, as is evident from his life and works. He promoted an important belief system (moral code) of truthful living [4]. He states: Sacẖahu orai sabẖ ko upar sacẖ ācẖār. Truth is the highest virtue, but higher still is truthful living. (M. 1, SGGS, p. 62) The second part of the current topic is related to the term “Peace.” Peace has always been among humanity's highest values. The most popular (Western) view of peace is an absence of dissension, violence, or war. But peace is also seen as concord, or harmony and tranquility. It is viewed as peace of mind or serenity, especially in the East [5]. Peace of mind (also called inner peace) indicates a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace. It refers to having enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself firm during discord or stress. Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, contains numerous references to the worship of the divine in Nature. The Sikh scripture declares that human beings' purpose is to achieve a blissful state and be in harmony with the Earth and all creation. Millions of Sikhs recite Gurbani daily wherein the divine is remembered using the symbolism from Nature, esp. air, water, sun, moon, trees, animals, and the Earth. The human mind loses communion with Nature and ultimately with (...) God by being self-conceited. It causes misery all around, is a repeated assertion of Sikhism. The contemporary environmental crisis is an outcome of the actions of such a self-conceited human mind. By affirming God's immanence and His presence in the creation, the Sikh religion imparts the spirit of self-righteousness to the entire subject of Nature. Sikhism is a remarkable religious and cultural phenomenon; several important themes emerge within its universe of beliefs. On the ecological front, the theology of Sikhism suggests that humans must live in harmony with Nature. The Sikh Gurus exemplified many of these teachings, and their examples continue to inspire contemporary social, religious, and environmental leaders in their efforts to protect the planet. Scientific attitude represents a spirit of critical and creative inquiry. It involves the process of logical reasoning. The ability to think objectively, logically and analytically leads to the development of a scientific attitude. It is a way of looking at things, the capacity that rids an individual of all kinds of prejudice and to look at the object in its entirety and its objectivity. Having a scientific attitude consists of being willing to accept only carefully and objectively verified facts. Scientific (...) attitude is a particular way of regarding something, using a scientific method. Scientific methodology is defined as a mode of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data gathered, a hypothesis formulated and then empirically tested. Guru Nanak not only propounded a rational and logical way of life but a realistic and optimistic worldview. The teachings of Guru Nanak focus on the search for truth and spiritual knowledge, keen observation of worldly phenomena, advocacy of universal egalitarianism, exposing taboos and shams, debunking futile rituals, confronting vain practices, censuring dogmas, challenging superstitious customs and denouncing stereotypes. Viewed in this light, Guru Nanak’s life was a continuous process of scientific experimentation and statement. Guru Nanak’s life and writings are rich in several such examples wherein his scientific approach to resolve several real-life situations with logic and rationality is evident. (shrink)

The human mind possesses matchless creativity and extensive capacity to create its own reality. It has a remarkable capability for contemplation, reflection and even manipulation. Sadly, the excellent human mind has been polluted by the rituals, dogmas, and deceptions of cultures, religions and politics. Its fickleness leads to its being held captive by maya (material world). In his hymns, Guru Tegh Bahadur enunciates that the fickleness of the mind is the primary cause of unhappiness and failure in achieving our prescribed (...) life goals. The Guru urges that a human being can restrain and channelize one's mental energies, by diverting one's mind from its animalistic tendencies and turning it to the mind's innate longing for spiritual enlightenment. He asserts that with the continual longing for the Divine Grace and having a compassionate and contented attitude, one can achieve the goal of harnessing one's mind. (shrink)

We are living in a world full of turmoil and tribulations. At the dawn of twenty first century, humanity is facing severe challenges to its very existence. The ever increasing environmental pollution the prevalence of large-scale corruption at various levels in society (esp. in underdeveloped countries) are threatening its ecological and social fabric. The monsters of drug menace and AIDS are trying to snuff out the very life breath of human beings. The rise of terrorism and political rivalries among nations (...) are threatening the world peace. In such a dismal state of affairs, the clouds of destruction are looming large over the humankind. But there is a ray of hope in the form of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, for salvation of humanity from its present ills. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), a unique religious and philosophic treatise, is a sublime blueprint to establish a reign of peace and prosperity on earth. About 550 years ago, Nanakian philosophy emerged with the advent of Guru Nanak (1469‐1539). It is sad to note that the present human society is still suffering from the same ills, which were prevalent at the time of the birth of Guru Nanak. Punjab, the birthplace of Nanakian Philosophy, is at present suffering from rampant practices of bribery and corruption, widespread usage of intoxicants/ narcotics, infanticide, and exploitation of weaker sections of society. It is in direct violation of the basic (...) tenets of the Nanakian Philosophy. Not only this, Guru Nanak urged us to live in harmony with nature. However, Punjabi community has over‐exploited the natural resources of the state, resulting in deforestation, soil, air and water pollution, and damage to its water table. Besides, there is a proliferation of numerous sects all around. Rituals and vain practices rule the roost in religious affairs. Such activities of Punjabi people are in direct conflict with the teachings of Guru Nanak. Thereby Sikhs have failed to implement Nanakian philosophy in its true essence. It is dire need of the hour to apply the quintessence of Nanakian philosophy, in all spheres of our life. (shrink)

Nearly 550 years ago, Guru Nanak put forward a new spiritual path. He called upon his followers to conform to a more practical way of life, reflecting a new social order. Guru Nanak wanted to empower the common man to seek and realize God, while living an honest family life, free from rituals, renunciations, and pilgrimages. His teachings were designed to promote equality among all humans. Nanakian Philosophy's governing belief in virtuous conduct is the guide to reach the ultimate reality. (...) Pride, infatuation, greed, maliciousness, and other temptations are contingent; one should not cling to them, but embrace an altruistic life. Moral rejuvenation and regeneration was the aim of Guru Nanak. He stated that life is a trust and it is to be spent in the love and service of humanity. Service to humanity is service to God. Truthful living is the essence of God-consciousness and in achieving this, one's company and association play an important role. One achieves and grows into the supreme position by joining the congregation of holy persons, but one who is in the bad company stands to face trial in the court of God. In this article, various aspects of the new social order, as envisaged by Guru Nanak will be brought to light. Emphasis shall be laid on, his three fundamental precepts - "Kirat Karo, Naam Japo and Vand Chhako". A practical approach to applying these ideas in everyday life is suggested. (shrink)

Gurbani helps us to decode Nature's invaluable lessons. Gurbani enunciates that Nature helps us to develop compassion and inner balance. It also guides us to help others to lead better lives. The interplay of five classical elements - air, water, fire, earth, and akasha is the fundamental cause of all-natural phenomena. (...) Let us reflect on some of the social, ethical and spiritual lessons being provided by these. Nature comprises the totality of material reality that does not result from human will. It is also defined as the whole universe as a place, source, and result of material phenomena, including humans. Sikhs commonly use the term Gurbani to refer to the hymns in the holy Sikh scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ, ਸਦਭਾਵਨਾ, ਸ਼ਾਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਹਾਲਤ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹੈ। ਹਿੰਸਾ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਆਦਰਸ਼, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੈ-ਇੱਛੁਕ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਯੁੱਧ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਅਧਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਵੱਖੋ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ, ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਾਂ, ਫਲਸਫਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਹਾਲਤ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤਾਂ ਇਹੋ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਧਰਤ-ਵਾਸੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ (...) ਜੰਗ ਦੇ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਖਤਮ ਹੋਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ । ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ, ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਰਪੱਖ ਸੰਗਠਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਖਾਸ ਕਰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗੀ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬਧਿਤ ਹੋਣ । ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਮਨ, ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਦਾਨ-ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਸਮੋਈ ਬੈਠੇ ਹਨ। ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਇਹੋ ਹੀ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ, ਫਿਰਕਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਦਰਮਿਆਨ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਮਈ ਸਹਿਹੌਂਦ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ ਬਸ਼ਰਤੇ ਕਿ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ, ਨਿਆਂ, ਸਵੈਮਾਣਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਦੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਰੰਟੀ ਹੋਵੇ। ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਖਾਸ ਕਰ ਸਤਸੰਗਤ, ਲੰਗਰ, ਪੰਗਤ, ਵੰਡ ਛਕਣਾ, ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ, ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ, ਸੇਵਾ, ਵਿਸ਼ਵਵਿਆਪੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਾ, ਨਿਆਂ, ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਂਝੀਵਾਲਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ, ਸਦਭਾਵਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਨਚਾਹੇ ਟੀਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੂਰਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਹੀ ਸੰਕਟਮਈ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲੰਘ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇੱਕੀਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢਲੇ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਹੌਂਦ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੱਡੇ ਖਤਰੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵਾਧਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਖੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੈਮਾਨੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਚਲਣ, ਸਾਡੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਨੁੰ ਵੱਡੀ ਢਾਹ ਲਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਮਾਦਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵਧ ਰਹੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਤੇ ਏਡਜ਼ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਬੀਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਖਤਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਆਤੰਕਵਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਧੇ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਦਵੈਸ਼ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸੰਕਟ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਕਟਮਈ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਬੱਦਲ ਮੰਡਰਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ, ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਖ਼ਤਰਾ ਬਣੇ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਦਿਖਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹਨ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਭਰ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਲਈ ਸੁਯੋਗ ਰਾਹਨੁਮਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਇਕ ਵੱਡਮੁੱਲਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਸਮੂਹ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਲਈ ਅਮਲਯੋਗ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਤੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਥਕਤਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।. In present times, Science has become more and more contiguous to philosophy due to the advent of Relativity theory and Quantum Mechanics. Relativity has modified our concepts of mass, length, force, law of addition of velocities and simultaneity and has given a new interpretation of the laws of conservation of energy and momentum. It has demonstrated the inner necessity of the idea of dialectic contradiction in the theoretical development of the contents of physics. Quantum Mechanics has continued what began with (...) the theory of relativity. It rejects unlimited detailing of objects in space and of phenomena in time. The concept of energy, momentum and angular momentum have now to take into account the possibility of quantization and the limitations imposed by the uncertainty relations. It has shown that the basic laws of nature are statistical and that the probabilistic form of causality is the fundamental form. It lays emphasis on relations of qualitatively different dialectic types, like the relations of complementarity and relations of interference. In the article, an attempt is made to show that these theories have called for a drastic revision of the seminal kernels of the traditional philosophy of science. (shrink)

Symbolism, as a literary device, is widely employed in the scriptures of almost all religions. Understanding the use of symbolism in a scripture enables us to comprehend and appreciate the intended message of the scripture’s author in a better way. The poetic compositions of Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) are notable for their richness, and various images and symbols used to tell its authors’ mystical and spiritual experiences. These compositions aptly use natural symbolism to describe humanity’s diverse physical and spiritual (...) needs and suggest innovative ways to tackle these issues. As SGGS’s message is addressed to the ordinary person, the symbolism used to depict various facets and aspirations of human life has been taken from nature and Indian culture. The impact of his teachings on Indian society has been incredible. He travelled far and wide to enlighten humanity and administered his message of love, peace, social justice, religious toleration, universal fellowship and the devotion of God. Basant (Spring) is a time of dawning light, new life, new birth, and new hope — a time of warmth, vitality, dancing, and blossoming. Every year she comes out of the cold darkness and captivatingly dances around us. She embraces us with her warmth, intoxicates us with her aroma. Like a potent elixir, spring revitalizes our hope. She breathes life into the dead and teaches us the lessons of renewal and rebirth [1]. The dawn of Basant has well appreciated in (...) Gurbani as; "Among the months, blessed is the month when spring always comes."[Mehl First, SGGS: 1168]; "The delightful season of spring has come." [Mehl First, SGGS: 1168] Every year, the vernal equinox occurs on the 21st of March. It indicates the starting of long, brighter days. The birds trill, bees buzz, and the buds of plants and trees burst forth. Humans stroll with a bit more spring in their step and sparkle in their eyes. Gurbani appreciates the blooming of Spring as; "The season of spring has come. It blossoms forth luxuriantly." [Mehl Fifth, SGGS: 1185] Feeling good in spring is more than psychological. The more extended light period of spring days has the power to change our biochemistry in positive ways. The increased sunlight exposure affects hormonal and metabolic functions. We feel more optimistic and resilient; even our reproductive patterns are affected by the light of spring. (shrink)

We are living in a world full of turmoil and tribulations. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, humanity is facing severe challenges to its very existence. The ever-increasing environmental pollution and the prevalence of large-scale corruption at all levels in society threaten its ecological and social fabric. In such a dismal state of affairs, the clouds of destruction are looming large over humankind. But, there is a ray of hope in the form of Sri Guru Granth Sahib for the salvation of humanity from its present ills. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) [1-4], a unique religious and philosophical treatise, is a sublime blueprint for establishing a reign of peace and prosperity on Earth. Barah Maha (Twelve months) is a form of folk poetry that describes the emotions and yearnings of the human heart, expressed in terms of the changing moods of nature over the twelve months of a year. In this form of poetry, the mood of nature in each particular month, of the Indian calendar, depicts the inner agony of the human heart which in most cases happens to be a lovelorn young woman separated from her spouse or beloved. In other words, (...) the separated woman finds her own agony reflected in the different faces of nature. There are two such compositions in Sri Guru Granth Sahib1-2 (SGGS). First one is by Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru. It is in Rag Tukhari. The other composition is by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. It is in Rag Manjh. Both the compositions, describe the yearnings of a lovelorn young woman (a metaphor for human soul) for her beloved (a metaphor for God). (shrink)

Governance encompasses the processes by which organizations are directed, controlled and held to account. It includes the authority, accountability, leadership, direction, and control exercised in an organization. Greatness can be achieved when good governance principles and practices are applied throughout the whole organization. Ethical Governance requires that public officials adhere to high moral standards while serving others. Authentic Governance entails the systematic process of continuous, gradual, and routine personal/corporate improvement, steering, and learning that lead to sustainable high personal/corporate performance and (...) excellence. Thus authentic governance represents the ability to discern right from wrong and the commitment to do what is right, good, and proper. Benevolent governance is perceived to be for benefit of the population as a whole. Sikhism, a panentheistic religion, originated in the Punjab province of the Indian subcontinent, during the 15th century. It is one of the youngest and fifth major world religions, founded by Guru Nanak. The fundamental beliefs of Sikhism have been enshrined in the sacred scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib [1-3]. These beliefs include faith in one universal creator, unity of all humankind, engaging in selfless service, striving for social justice for all, honest livelihood and ethical conduct while living a householder's life. Sri Guru Grant Sahib provides very useful insights for governance through religious or secular organizations, that address human rights, education, or diplomacy to end all forms of disparity/discrimination among people [4-5]. In this article, an attempt is made to understand how the doctrines of Sikhism encourage us for better governance and by which means. Whether these doctrines align with the above-mentioned forms of governance or conflict with these. It is pointed out the most of the attributes of good, ethical, authentic and benevolent governance are genuinely supported by the Sikh doctrines. Sikhism, the fifth-largest organized religion in the world, was founded in the fifteenth century in Punjab, India. Guru Nanak Dev and his successor Sikh Gurus established this system of religious philosophy. The sacred scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is the present Guru of the Sikhs. The religious philosophy of Sikhism is traditionally known as Gurmat. Sikhism originated from the word Sikh, having the Sanskrit root śiṣya meaning "disciple" or "learner." With about 27 million followers or 0.39% of the world population (...) [4], approximately 83% of the Sikhs live in India. Islam is the religion articulated by the Holy Quran, a religious book. Its adherents consider it the verbatim word of the one incomparable God (Allah). The Muslims live by following the Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad's demonstrations and real-life examples (Sunnah). The Sunnah has been collected through Prophet Hazrat Muhammad's companions' narration in collections of Hadith. Islam means submission to God. The word Islam is derived from the Arabic word "Salam," which means peace. With about 1.7 billion followers or 23% of the global population, Islam is the second-largest religion by the number of its adherents. (shrink)

The five classical elements of creation are also known as Panch Tattva or the basic elements of life. Within these, and through these, life has prevailed and evolved. Although various religious philosophies differ in many details, they emphasize the fundamental unity of the universe through recognizing these elements as the basis of creation. Thus, Panch Tattva's knowledge helps us transcend the notion of an isolated individual self and identify ourselves with the ultimate reality.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, was a divine preceptor and crusader for noble cause of human welfare. He was a great religious leader, a poet and a mystic, a true scholar and philosopher. He was also a fearless warrior and a military commander, who always fought against tyranny and oppression, to establish a just and benign state. In his hymns of 'Bachitar Natak', he proclaimed his mission as 'to protect the righteous, oppressed and downtrodden people and to destroy (...) the evil-doers'. He stressed on the unity between humans, rejected all sorts of discriminations and preached equality and goodwill. Being a prolific writer and a poet of rare sensibility, Guru Gobind Singh greatly enriched the literary heritage of India. His poetic vision depicts the glorious epitome of medieval Indian literary traditions. Through his compositions, he enunciated a doctrine of armed struggle for the protection of truth and justice. The fusion of the devotional and martial, of the spiritual and the heroic ethos is the most important feature of his literary work and his charismatic leadership. With his spiritual dynamism, he attempted to reconcile the transcendent with the immanent through his creation of the Khalsa. The commonwealth of the Khalsa was founded based on all round equality and total dedication to one Supreme Reality. Guru Gobind Singh was a pioneer Indian leader to introduce republican set up and democratic institutions. His teachings have great relevance for the modern man to build a global society with a commitment to peace and goodwill across all sorts of constraints and geographical boundaries. (shrink)
